Mother-of-the-Bride Gowns

It feels like only yesterday you saw your kid skip off to school for the first time… Suddenly, you find yourself musing on rows of classy creations for mothers, while your children prepare to plight their troth in a solemn rite of passage called ‘wedding’. When did it all happen? Celebrating your child’s nuptials is an ultimate joy as well as a moment of sadness, of letting go.

Despite the jitters, one wants to appear serene and stately on the day. And this is the look the fashion industry strives to enhance with elegantly designed mother-of-the-bride gowns in calm dignified colors. Just add a few touches to make it picture-perfect.

Why bring a gown to be altered

It is not easy to find something that fits to a tee right off. You may fall in love with a dress which is a bit large or small. Just as the rest of formal wear<, most off-the-shelf mother-of-the-bride gowns are taken to be altered.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Alteration-friendly garments should have two or more inches’ seam allowance. Yet, it is better to take in a dress than expand it, especially more than one size which may mean inserting extra fabric panels.
  • Letting out satin, silk or velvet mother-of-the-bride gowns is not an option, as on these fabrics the old seams’ lines can remain visible.
  • To adjust a gown correctly, we will ask you to also bring the shoes and basement garments you are going wear at the event.

Of course, mother-of-the-bride gowns are less elaborate than the daughters’ attire. Still, we advise you book the first appointment early. You may need more than one fitting session. Embroidered, sequined and otherwise decorated dresses require more time.

It is possible to add lace and embellishments as well as remove some of them if the ready-to-wear look is too sumptuous for your taste.

Perhaps, you have an heirloom dress or a special vintage gown you would like to don. It can be altered and even revamped. If it is small, we can look into adding a corset back or gussets
